Genre Research: Life
Life is a 2017 American epic science fiction horror movie by
Skydance Media and Sony Pictures. The film follows a six-member crew from the
International Space Station who uncovers the first signs of life on Mars. Upon
successful retrieval of a spacecraft returning from Mars, the crew of the
International Space Station are delighted to find that they now have a sample
containing an organism that offers the first evidence of existence outside
Earth. The ISS team ensures strict obedience to the safety protocol to ensure
that nothing goes wrong if the organism happens to be harmful or lethal to
humans.
The Martian organism (which is called "Calvin" in
honor of an elementary school back on Earth) starts to grow rapidly in the ISS
laboratory, but otherwise appears to be benign... until one day, after an
accident in the lab, "Calvin" unexpectedly becomes aggressive and an
imminent threat to everyone on board. As the various people on board the ISS
fight to contain this newfound danger and keep themselves alive in the process,
there is one thing they agree on: they cannot allow this monster to make its
way to Earth, even though it means risking their own lives to do so.
"Calvin" is a solid CGI creation that kills its
victims in an effective and disturbing way in Life, making it one of the most
unique elements of the film. This element of the sci-fi genre will not be in my
film; however, this is an element I find fascinating. Life contains several
things that I like for instance the hostel situation, and survival skills. I
also enjoyed watching the members use all the resources available to SURVIVE.
This will be a trait that I will add to my movie... Survival. My main character
will be focused on survival. This movie was focused to be an outer space sci-fi
movie, with conflict taking place outer space. I will not have this in my final
task as well, but I am fascinated by the concept.
Lastly, there just isn't space to not like this movie but
the ending. The movie left with a cliff hanger that isn't solved. There is not
a happy ending, or a sad ending. The movie ends with the alien form on Earth
and now free. We know that the dangerous creature was the cause to the possible
reason that Mars no longer has any life form. The creature grows faster when
exposed to oxygen, and Earth has plenty of air. The twilight-like ending is a
bug for me because I like closure.
