Research blog: Music Video Conventions

For this project I decided that I will be doing this song believers by Imagine Dragons. And this music video the audience usually wants to be engaged or hyped up as it’s commonly said in the music industry. Common conventions would include the following.

And most music videos that is in my genre, the producers tend to include many longshots, Close ups and mid shots. This is to create an emphasis on the author the location in emotion which is usually an explosive emotion. The close-ups are usually used to reflect the words of the song with the movement of the lip of the artist which is used in the music video originally used for believers. The original believers video the director had he had many clothes shots on the person playing the guitar the person singing this song and the person playing the drums having them lip-synch most of the time. I will be using similar conventions in my music video.

The mis-en-scene in Music videos in my genre usually puts importance on the representation of something for example in mad by Neil, the missing scene involves him walking down a road along being in an isolated room this reflects the isolation from his lover. Another example would be found and Shawn Mendes is, treat you better, where the characters is seen banging on adore emphasizing the fact that they are behind closed doors and are no longer allowed inside of the relationship. Props would include hats in dark clothes is which represents dark mode and the lighting would be very similar and kept very dark as it is black-and-white. In the music video the Directors also used prop such as stage lights in different colors to shine and move around the person that is in civic shots emphasizing that they are the main character at those specific scenes.

Other important conventions would include feeding and dissolves as transitions as well as predominant editing techniques used in music videos by professionals. This sounds are mainly vocals or the song but in some cases for example the Michael Jackson’s, thriller, the producer made it into mini short film where the audience feels as if they are engaging alongside Michael Jackson. In my specific song the directors made it seem as also in a short film where the two main characters are boxing each other and it repeatedly says pain makes you a believer and they continuously fight throughout the entire music video.
